Ready to say ‘Om’? {Nat’l Yoga Month is coming!}

Last year was the second annual National Yoga Month {also the year it became an official “national” event – woo!} and I’m beyond excited!

National Yoga Month September 2010 invites all styles of yoga to participate in an awareness campaign designed to educate about the many benefits of yoga and inspire our fellow citizens to live healthier, happier lives.

I took my first stab at yoga last September thanks to Nat’l Yoga Month and it’s been one of the greatest things in my life. To this date, it’s been more healing to my chronic lower back pain than any medication or spine specialist ever has. It’s truly amazing.

Check out this quick video from last year:

Fun stuff, right? Even if you have NEVER stepped foot on a yoga mat, there’s a style of yoga for you. More importantly, there’s also a PLACE for you. I “test drove” a few studios before finding one I meshed with – and with over 1,000 studios nationwide participating in the free week of yoga, it’s a great time to test drive as many as you want!

What’s in it for you? Let’s see…

Health Benefits

Yoga has been researched extensively and is know to have a wide range of health benfits for body, mind, spirit:

  • Lower blood pressure
  • Decreased stress
  • Greater flexibility (not just physically!)
  • Enhanced brain function
  • Lower cholesterol
  • Better skeletal alignment
  • Strengthened bones/joints
  • Improved respiration
  • Weight Loss
  • Enhanced circulation
  • Easier transition
    through menopause
  • Deeper peace of mind
  • And many more…

Ommmm.

Follow the blog through the entire month of September to learn more about yoga, meet some incredible yogis, tour some local studios and score a few fun yoga freebies from the giveaways.

Namaste.

I *love* yoga so much. I’ve been doing it for 13 years and now my body feels odd when I don’t do it.

Found your adorable blog on SITS girls. ;-)

Hey Lindsay: I absolutely agree with you on yoga and back pain. I have scoliosis and have found nothing compares with managing the pain and keeping my back strong and limber like yoga. I’ve been practicing for around 15 years now. I love yoga because it calms by brain down and gives me calm space in head. Love that quiet. Glad you found it!

Hi Shawna! Isn’t it amazing how much it helps?! I absolutely love it. So great to hear that you’re still benefiting from and loving it after 15 years :)

Hope you’re having a wonderful weekend!!

I love your creative and informative blog, Lindsay = ‘ ) My brother-in-law gave me a video and book on yoga by Patricia Walden a few years ago and I tell him it’s one of the best gifts I’ve ever received.

A little yoga goes a long way!

Okay. How prescient. I’ve been talking seriously for the last week about starting yoga. And now you tell me it’s almost National Yoga Week!

    I must do it now.

Yoga is incredibly helpful for the lower back. I found that Leeann Carey has a great free yoga video on pelvic positions that help with alignment. Your readers might want to check it out: http://planetyoga.com/yoga-blogs/index.php/free-yoga-video-safe-alignment-skills-sas-pelvic-positions/
